At HAVAS Red Australia, we believe that powerful storytelling and strategic communications can drive real, lasting impact. That belief comes to life every year during National Volunteer Week — and in 2025, its theme, “Connecting Communities,” is one that resonates deeply with who we are and how we work.

As a purpose-driven Public Relations agency, we recognise that meaningful change begins when individuals — and organisations — step up. That’s why we proudly offer two paid volunteer days each year to every HAVAS Red team member. This initiative not only empowers our people to give back to the causes they care about but also supports their own wellbeing through greater social connection, reduced stress, and an enhanced sense of purpose.

Turning Purpose into Impact: Our Work with Rio’s Legacy

Some of the most meaningful work we’ve done has grown from these values. A powerful example is our ongoing partnership with Rio’s Legacy, an Australian charity committed to improving end-of-life care for terminally ill children and their families. Founded by Ryan and Karen Fowler in honour of their son Rio, the organisation has an incredibly moving mission — one that we felt compelled to support through our lowbono offering.

Through strategic communications, media relations, and advocacy support, our agency has helped Rio’s Legacy amplify its message and gain critical visibility. This collaborative effort recently contributed to a major milestone: the NSW Government’s commitment to funding Australia’s fourth children’s hospice — and only the second in NSW. It’s a testament to the power of PR when aligned with a meaningful cause.

Why PR Agencies Should Invest in Purpose-Driven Work

For agencies like HAVAS Red, volunteering and lowbono work aren’t add-ons — they’re a core part of how we connect our professional expertise with societal impact. The broader PR industry is incredibly generous, often going above and beyond for non-profits and community causes. As National Volunteer Week reminds us, investing time, skills, and stories into purpose-led initiatives builds more compassionate, resilient communities.

As communicators, we are in a unique position to shift perceptions, elevate unheard voices, and create tangible outcomes. Whether it’s providing pro bono strategy, crafting compelling media stories, or simply showing up — every act of support matters.

A Call to Action for the Communications Industry

This National Volunteer Week, we encourage our peers across the Australian PR and communications industry to reflect on the power of giving back. Make time for the causes that matter. Use your platforms to raise awareness. Offer your skills where they can have the greatest impact.

Together, we can keep turning intention into action — and connect communities in ways that matter most.
